The turbine of the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was put on the barring gea

At the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (No 7 of NVNPP) the specialists have completed the important pre-commissioning technological operation – the putting of the turbine of the barring gear.

This event was preceded by a large complex of works: the connection of the turbine’s elements and highly precise alignment, the closing of the cylinders of low and high pressure. The specialists prepared the lubrication system, the system of hydrolift of turbine generator rotors, and the barring gear to work.

The purpose of putting turbine on the barring gear is to check whether all the elements of the turbine are assembled and aligned correctly and the axes are positioned correctly towards the bar of the turbine generator.

The barring gear is the beginning of the rotation of the turbine that rotates due to the gear installed there. During this operation, the systems of hydrolift, lubrication, oil cooling and heating, etc. are checked and adjusted.

“During the rotation of the turbine there were no failures; this testifies about the high quality of the assembly and the accurate joining of all its elements”, the senior shift head of NPP Roman Gridnev noted.

The next step is the completion of the assembly of steam separation and reheat system that takes part in a trial vacuum buildup in the turbine condenser.

For reference:

* Full-speed turbines with capacity of 1,200 MW for NPP are designed for the power units of new generation with the increased reliability and safety. At the present, the turbines with capacity of 1,200 MW are the most powerful full-speed steam turbines in the world.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
