The first powering of the main circulating pump was carried out at the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2

On 17 July, 2018 at 19:23 at Novovoronezh NPP-2 power unit No 2 (power unit No 7 of NVNPP) under construction the first powering of the main circulating pump No 2 (MCP-2) was carried out.

This event was preceded by the MCP electric motor testing at idle. After this, the electric motor was directly connected to the pump, and the testing of all mechanisms of the MCP was carried out.

The main circulating pump is an element of the reactor building equipment. Its main task is to provide the water movement (coolant) in the never ending circle between the steam generator and reactor unit.

“Vibration condition of the pumping unit is without complaints; the technological parameters are in the normal condition. The powering of the MCP-2 is an important procedure. Every MCP of the power unit will be tested the same way. We have four of them”, the shift captain of the power unit Sergey Zelenin explained.

At this stage of the pre-commissioning preparation of the power unit the procedure of the MCP powering sums up the readiness of the primary circuit to the next stage – the circulation flushing of the primary circuit and to the beginning of the cold and hot trial.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
