The readiness of the new power unit No 4 of Rostov NPP for commercial operation is confirmed

What happened

On 19 June, 2018, the 4th power unit of Rostov NPP (Volgodonsk, a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC, a part of Rosatom’s Electric Power Division) successfully completed the commissioning tests (complex testing) before the unit was put into commercial operation.

Within 15 days the 4th unit was operated at the nominal power level without reducing the load. During this time, complex checks of the joint operation of the main and auxiliary equipment, automatic control systems, regular equipment switching systems, control and monitoring systems to confirm the design parameters were carried out. All results will be reflected in the protocol of the Startup Management Team (SMT).

Why this is unique

“The successful completion of the commissioning tests confirms the technical readiness of the power unit No 4 for industrial operation”, the Plant Manager of Rostov NPP Andrey Salnikov emphasized the importance of the event.

The complex testing completed the experimental-industrial production stage and is followed by the next stage of commissioning the power unit into commercial operation. After that, with the readiness confirmation from Rostekhnadzor all facilities of the start-up complex will be put into operation.

The final conclusion on the readiness of Rostov NPP unit No 4 for industrial operation will be given by the acceptance commission of Rosenergoatom JSC.

For reference

The power unit No 4 is the last power unit being built at Rostov NPP, the last one in the legendary series of units with VVER-1000 reactors. The main characteristic of these reactors with the most advanced defense-in-depth based security approach is the highest degree of reliability.

Today, Rostov NPP is one of the largest enterprises in the energy sector of Rostov Oblast and the South of the country. The launch of the power unit No 4 will make it possible to sustainably supply energy to the entire region.

In this case, Rostov Oblast itself will enter the top ten Russian Oblasts leading in energy generation. Now the Plant provides about half of the electric energy of the region. Electric energy from units goes to the Volgograd Oblast, Krasnodar and Stavropol Krais and to the city of Volgodonsk, being the basis of the energy security of the entire power system of the South of the country. With the commissioning of the new power unit No 4, the Plant’s share in energy production in the region will be over 50%.

Rostov NPP is the branch of the Rosenergoatom (a part of the Electric Energy Division – the largest division of Rosatom State Corporation). The enterprise is located at the shore of Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13 km away from the town of Volgodonsk. The NPP operates the reactors of VVER-1000 type with the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. The power unit No 1 was put into industrial operation in 2001, No 2 – in 2010, No 3 – in September, 2015. The power unit No 4 was started up in February, 2018.
