Kalinin NPP: the industrial operation of the power unit No 3 was started at a capacity of 104%

The power unit No 3 of Kalinin NPP was put into industrial operation at the reactor unit permitted power of 104% of the normal.

The corresponding permit – a change to the terms of the license for operation of Kalinin NPP power unit No 3 at the power level of 104% – was issued on 8 June, 2018, by the Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service (Rostekhnadzor).

The 3rd unit operation at the 104% power is carried out in accordance with the industry Program for Increasing Electric Power Generation at the Operating Power Units of Rosenergoatom NPPs. The Program is aimed at deep equipment modernization and technical features improvement, which is directly connected to more stable and safe unit operation.

To implement this Program, the power unit No 3 had gone through a set of works that justified the safety of the reactor unit at higher power levels, environmental safety; the Plant’s team had developed some measures to modernize the equipment for increased power operation. In 2014, the state environmental impact assessment of the materials for operation license justification of the power unit No 3 at 104% power was ended with a positive conclusion.

The Experimental Industrial Pilot Operation at a power level of 104% of the normal was carried out at the power unit No 3 for four fuel cycles; during this period the data on the parameters of the reactor unit and other systems were collected. At the end of this period, a consolidated report was prepared, on the basis of which the Rostekhnadzor experts gave a positive safety assessment and issued a permit for industrial operation of the power unit No 3 of Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant at the power level of 104%.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the Rosenergoatom. The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
