Leningrad NPP-2: the reactor unit of the innovative VVER-1200 power unit No 1 is put into 90% capacity for the first time

The innovative Generation III+ power No 1 with VVER-1200 reactor of Leningrad NPP-2 (a Rosenergoatom’s branch, a part of Rosatom State Corporation’s Electric Energy Division) that has been at the pilot and industrial operation since 26 March was put into 90% capacity. The specialists proceeded to the next trial of the equipment and technological systems in order to confirm their reliable, safe and effective operation.

“Another milestone was achieved: we successfully completed a number of checks of the first starting power unit at the reactor unit’s capacity of 75% and proceeded to the next substage of the unit’s testing. It can be said that today we are three steps away from its commissioning: the testing at 90% and 100% capacity, as well as a 15-day complex unit trial at the nominal parameters will be the final point in a number of trials that we carried out accurately under the gradual increase of the capacity level of the reactor unit”, the Chief Engineer of Leningrad NPP under construction Aleksandr Belyaev noted.

He also stressed that all the trials of the power unit carried out during the pilot and industrial operation in the last two and a half months were convincing to show that the assembly and commissioning works at the new power unit were carried out fully and properly. There are no comments to the power unit performance at the capacity levels of 40%, 50% and 75%.

The started trial of the power unit at 90% reactor capacity will be carried out throughout June: the specialists will check the effectiveness of the biological protection, study the heat balance at the primary and secondary circuits, adjust their water and chemical regime, check the effectiveness of the system of borating of the high pressure, test the systems of the in-vessel control, study the neutronic characteristics of the reactor core, etc.

As for 9 June the VVER-1200 power unit No 1 of Leningrad NPP being at the final stage of commissioning has given more than 760 million kilowatt-hours of the electric energy into the Unified Energy System of Russia. According to the preliminary estimates after it is put into industrial operation the economical effect in the form of additional taxes into the consolidated budget of Leningrad Oblast will be more than 3 billion rubles (on a year-on-year basis). New capacities will provide the high level of energy security of the country, allow to continue the implementation of a number of large regional investment projects that require the significant energy consumption, as well as will contribute to the growth, development and strengthening of the financial independence of Sosnovy Bor.

Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom. The Plant is located at the town of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west of St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. LNPP is the first plant in the country with RBMK-1000 reactors (thermal-neutron heat-pipe cooled uranium-graphite nuclear reactors). The NPP operates four power units with an electric capacity of 1,000 MW each. The first unit of replacement capacities with VVER-1200 reactor is at the physical start-up stage, the second VVER-1200 type unit is under construction. Rosenergoatom Concern JSC is the customer-developer of the project, ATOMPROEKT JSC is the general designer, and CONTSERN TITAN-2 JSC is the general contractor.
