The IAEA experts highly assessed the operational status of Kalinin NPP facilities

The operational condition of the equipment, production facilities and industrial site of Kalinin NPP is at a good state. This was announced by the experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Operational Safety Department Kari Mäkela and Dian Zahradka during the meeting to prepare the OSART mission, which was held at Kalinin NPP from 4 June to 7 June, 2018.

The meeting was also attended by Sergey Kharlampiev, a representative of the International Scientific and Technical Cooperation Department of Rosenergoatom JSC, heads of preparation of the inspection areas, and members of the OSART analytical group at Kalinin NPP.

During the visit, the directions and terms of the OSART mission at Kalinin NPP were determined – in April 2020, the IAEA experts will assess (using the 3rd power unit) the state of operational safety of KNPP in the following areas: managers and safety management, training and certification, operation, technical maintenance and repair, technical support, use of operational experience for improving safety, radiation protection, chemistry, and accident management.

Also, the IAEA representatives walked around the premises of the power unit No 3 and the laboratory and amenity building (LAB), monitored the personnel's compliance with the rules and regulations during operation, inspected the backup mobile special equipment necessary to ensure safe operation of the power unit in an emergency situation.

“KNPP personnel are aware of the importance of the forthcoming mission and understand that it must be carefully prepared for”, Yevgeniy Ozerov, the head of the analytical team for the OSART mission preparation at Kalinin NPP, noted. “Activities to prepare for the OSART mission continue. Right now we are implementing about 350 improvements in 9 areas. We conduct a lot of work and invest a lot of efforts and resources to complete the planned works by the start of the OSART mission.

Summing up the visit, the IAEA experts noted an open and positive environment of cooperation from the management and specialists of the Nuclear Power Plant. As a result of the meeting, a protocol will be signed between the IAEA and the management of Kalinin NPP; it will determine the administrative and organizational issues for the preparation and conduct of the forthcoming OSART mission.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the Rosenergoatom. The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
