The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of Bangladesh highly evaluated Novovoronezh NPP’s new unit security systems

On 28 February, the People's Republic of Bangladesh delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tuhida Bulbul visited Novovoronezh NPP.

The main purpose of this visit was to see the progress of Novovoronezh NPP-2 power unit No 2 construction (unit No 7 of Novovoronezh NPP), to learn about its twin brother unit No 1 operation practice (power unit No 6 of Novovoronezh NPP), and to witness the process of learning at Novovoronezh NPP Training Center.

“Novovoronezh NPP struck us with the innovative technologies that it uses. We paid special attention to security systems, because the innovative power units of NVNPP-2 are reference points for Ruppur NPP. The facility itself and the way the work is organized here have once again proved that the decision to build a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh using Russian technologies is right”, the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tuhida Bulbul noted.

In two days a delegation from Bangladesh – that included members of the District Council of the Pabna District, where Ruppur NPP is being built – visited the main control room of Novovoronezh NPP-2 first power unit (power unit No 6 of Novovoronezh NPP) that had been put into commercial operation, inspected the cooling towers, and visited the Novovoronezh innovative units’ observation platform. In addition, they visited the Plants’ Training Center, where they got acquainted with the process of personnel training.

It is to be recalled that in 2011, Russia and the People's Republic of Bangladesh entered into an intergovernmental agreement on the construction of Ruppur NPP (on the eastern bank of the Ganges River, 160 kilometers from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh). In autumn 2013, the foundation stone of the future power plant had been laid. It is planned that the Phase I of the NPP will be equipped with two power units with Russian VVER reactors with the capacity of 1,200 MW each.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
