The installation of a ventilation pipe is completed at the second power unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 under construction

Novovoronezh NPP-2 (town of Novovoronezh, a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern, a part of Rosatom's largest Electric Power Division) has completed the installation of the ventilation pipe at the power unit No 2 under construction (ASE Group of Companies is a General Designer and General Contractor for the construction of Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant-2 units, an engineering division of Rosatom State Corporation).

The equipment was installed in two stages. At first, the equipment elements were assembled on the ground, and then installed in the design position by a crane. This helped to shorten the period of installation operations.

The ventilation pipe is a part of the technological ventilation system of the reactor building and the special building, and is designed for air ventilation, excess heat and moisture removal, and maintenance of necessary conditions for equipment and personnel operation during the repair and reloading operations or the reactor shutdown. Passing through the filtration plants with a high degree of purification, the air that is fed into the pipe is cleaned, and thus it does not pollute the atmosphere.

“The one-hundred-meter ventilation pipe is one of the highest structures of the power unit start-up complex, considerably exceeding the height of the reactor building, and the second only to the evaporative cooling towers that are 171 meters high”, Oleg Shperle, the Vice-President of JSC ASE, said. “The characteristics of the ventilation pipe are designed for serious wind loads and seismic effects up to 6.”

The power units of Novovoronezh NPP-2 under construction belong to the 3+ generation; and the Plant project fully complies with international safety requirements. The first unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (a VVER-1200 type reactor, 1200 MW capacity) was put into commercial operation in February, 2017.

In 2017, a new Russian power unit, NVNPP-2, was named among the world's top three nuclear plants by POWER (USA), the influential international magazine.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
