The WANO technical support mission has started at Novovoronezh NPP

A technical support mission of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) on the subject of “Non-falling of foreign objects into the equipment” has started at Novovoronezh NPP.

During the working week, from 4 to 8 December 2017, 9 WANO experts from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, and Ukraine will exchange experience with Novovoronezh nuclear industry workers on the subject of foreign objects non-falling; they will look through the main production halls and facilities of the power units No 4 and No 5, will conduct ‘brainstorms’ and personnel interviews.

“It was we who applied to the WANO with a request to conduct the non-falling of foreign objects technical support mission at Novovoronezh nuclear plant. This area is very important for the safe operation of nuclear power plants and there are no limits for its improvement”, the Head of the Centralized Repair Shop Evgeniy Babushkin said at the initial meeting.

According to Sergey Nistratov, the Head of the Department for International and Foreign Economic Cooperation of Novovoronezh NPP, the NPP is traditionally an active participant in international cooperation programs in various fields of nuclear energy industry and maintains a high level of interaction with various international organizations (the IAEA, the WANO, etc.).

In 2017, three technical support missions were held at the Nuclear Plant; they were dedicated to such topics as “Leadership in Safety Culture Management”, “Identification of Root Causes and Development of Effective Corrective Measures”, “Methods for Controlling the Accumulation of Activated Corrosion Products and Corrosion Process of Primary-Circuit Equipment of Nuclear Power Plants”.

The mission on the subject of “Non-falling of foreign objects into the decompacted equipment” will become the fourth and final in the current year.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
