Leningrad NPP: the reactor vessel for power unit No 2 under construction is successfully shipped to Sosnovy Bor

14 November, 2017 the nuclear heart for the Leningrad NPP’s second VVER-1200 power unit under construction – the reactor vessel - was shipped to Sosnovy Bor. Supersized cargo was shipped from production site of Izhorskiye zavody PJSC and was delivered by ship to the Ust’inskiy town pier in 10 days.

The delivery package includes 7 cylindrical structures (shells), the cap of the upper unit and internals. The vessel’s length is 11 m, and weigh is 340 t.

The equipment is manufactured from high test carbon steel and can endure extreme temperature and pneumatic loads that provide the high reliability of operation of Leningrad NPP’s future power unit.

Aleksandr Letyaev, the Head of Logistic Management at Izhorskiye zavody PJSC: “In order to deliver the cargo of such importance we prepared the special project that included two technological transportations by railway – from production site and through Saint Petersburg, then the reactor vessel was shipped by river, under the bridges of Northern Capital, and into the Gulf of Finland and took the sea route to Sosnovy Bor about 40 km long. Despite poor weather conditions super heavy cargo was successfully delivered to the customer in ten days set for this operation.”

At the present time the reactor vessel is transported by the special vehicle at the construction site of Leningrad NPP. It will be set into place in the reactor building of the VVER-1200 power unit No 2 by the end of the year.

Apart from the reactor vessel for Leningrad NPP’s second power unit under construction this platform called Novorossiysk will ship the reactor vessel for Belene NPP by marine passage en route from Sosnovy Bor to Bulgaria.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
