Novovoronezh NPP: a water intake from the Don River has been reduced 10 times over the last years - Rosprirodnadzor at the Voronezh Oblast

The water intake from the Don River despite the power extension*(increase) of Novovoronezh NPP – one of the largest water consumers – has been reduced over the last years almost 10 times. This was reported by the Director of the Rosprirodnadzor Management in the Voronezh Oblast Viktor Stupin during a working seminar on environmental control.

Three days workshop - coincided with the Year of Ecology in Russia - was held at Novovoronezh NPP on 15-17 August, 2017. Apart from environmental control matters the participants also discussed the results of the external audit of the Environmental Management System (EMS).

“Over the last years the region has experienced significant changes for the better. When the first power units operated, the water intake from the River Don was 1.8 billion cubic metres per year. Now – despite the power increase – the water intake has been reduced almost 10 times. This is a good result”, V. Stupin stressed out. He also noted that according to expert data on radionuclide release its indicator is less than 1% from the permitted value.

More than 100 representatives of the supervisory bodies of the Voronezh Oblast (the Department of Natural Resources and Ecology, Rosprirodnadzor Administration, etc.), Rosatom State Corporation, Rosenergoatom Concern, Novovoronezh NPP, the Municipality Administration of Novovoronezh and different nongovernmental organizations participated in the workshop.

The participants told about the implementation system of environmental policy, environmental control at Russian NPPs – actual status and prospects – as well as about the environmental activity of Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant. Reports on the events in the Voronezh Oblast during the Year of Ecology and the state of rational usage and water conservation were of profound interest.

“There are more than 1,300 events aimed at the reduction of negative impact to the environment in a 2017 comprehensive plan of Rosatom Corporation on the implementation of environmental policy. The enterprises of nuclear power industry have joined the Year of Ecology. This was a certain push, and next year we’re going to continue”, the Director of the Research and Development Institute on Environmental Issues Olga Plyamina noted.

A great cultural program was organized for the participants of the workshop. It included technical tour at the observation site of Novovoronezh NPP innovative power units, as well as the excursion over the historically significant and specially protected sites of the Voronezh Oblast.

Novovoronezh NPP is the branch company of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC. The plant is situated at the Don River bank 42 km South from Voronezh. This is the first NPP in Russia with VVER reactors (water-water energetic reactors of shell type with ordinary water under pressure). Each of the Plant’s five reactors is one of its kind – a prototype of energetic reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second power unit – in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth – in 1972, and the fifth – in 1980.

Power units No 1 and 2 were shutdown in 1984 and 1990 respectively. Power unit No 3 was shutdown in 2016 to carry out the events of decommissioning.
*On 27 February, 2017 the power unit No 1 of NVNPP-2 was commissioned. The power unit No 2 of NVNPP-2 is at the commissioning stage; it is scheduled to be commissioned it in 2018.
