Rostov NPP: sprinkler system of a starting power unit No 4 has been successfully tested

The specialists of Rostov NPP have successfully tested the sprinkler system, and now it is ready for operation.

The sprinkler system is designed for localization of pipe break accidents inside the containment of the primary and secondary circuits. During the normal operation of power unit it is in standby mode and is operated with a special container filled with potassium borate solution. With a power unit safety protecting signal the system is brought into operation automatically by delivering a borate solution into a number of atomizers under the containment dome and thus condensating the steam and reducing the pressure in the NPP containment to the normal parameters.

“This is one of the stages to check the readiness of safety systems to function. The specialists have made a quality inspection of sprinkler system assembly, and checked functionality of the containment spray line. All the factors are in normal condition.”, the Head of the Phase II Reactor Shop Oleg Vysotskiy noted on the results of the testing.

Before the beginning of the testing performed by the operational personnel of the Nuclear Power Plant and the specialists of Rostov branch of Atomtekhenergo JSC the power and de-energizing control of all the electrical equipment and actuators of the motordriven valves was carried out.

During the testing chemically demineralized water from the container with the boron emergency reserve was fed by pumps under the reactor unit containment dome and scattered by special atomizers. In the course of the testing the operating personnel of Rostov NPP was in the pressurized volume (pressurized area) and controlled the water ingress into the rooms of leak-tight enclosure, and the work of sprinklers.

The work parameters of system safety train were monitored at the main control room (MCR) of the power unit No 4.

The power block No. 4 is planned to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
