Leningrad NPP: the hydraulic tests of the reactor unit secondary circuit for leak and damage have been completed at the power unit No 1 under construction

Leningrad NPP has completed the hydraulic tests for leak and damage at the VVER-1200 reactor unit secondary circuit of the power unit No 1 under construction.

Vladimir Pereguda, the Plant Manager of Leningrad NPP congratulated the Nuclear Power Plant team on the fulfillment of this key event and noted that the conducted hydraulic tests have completed the reactor unit’s cold trial sub-stage and have given a start to the hot trial, which would confirm the operability of the main and auxiliary equipment and the systems of the reactor unit at the power unit under construction in working modes.

Aleksandr Belyaev, the Chief Engineer of Leningrad NPP under construction, said about the works that were carried out during the tests, “We filled the reactor unit secondary circuit with a coolant (chemically demineralized water) and loaded the steam generators and corresponding pipelines and fittings with fluid under pressure to check their resistance to leak and damage. The test pressure, created in the secondary circuit, was 11.5 MPa. The tests confirmed that the secondary circuit equipment and pipelines have been manufactured and assembled in a high quality, their thermal, hydraulic, strength, vibration, and dynamic characteristics correspond with the design ones.”

Hydraulic tests were carried out on ‘cold’ water: due to the operation of the main circulation pumps and the pressure compensator electric heaters, the water of the primary circuit heated the water of the secondary circuit to 110-115 °C.

“The tests are recognized as successful. While they’ve been conducting and their results have been checking, all the measured and monitored parameters (temperature of steam generator housings’ metal, their water level, pressure, etc.) did not exceed the limits specified in the test program. There were no leaks of the test environment, residual deformations, or metal breakages found in steam generators and pipelines”, Vitaliy Shutikov, the Head of the Reactor Shop at Leningrad NPP under construction, added.

He also noted that similar hydraulic tests have been successfully carried out at the primary circuit –which main elements are the reactor, steam generators, circulating pumps, pressure compensator and main circulation pipeline – this April.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
