A record number of world nuclear power industry ambassadors from more than 40 countries has visited Leningrad NPP

On 13 July, 2017, Leningrad NPP was visited by the authorized representatives of 42 countries to the International Organizations in Vienna. The purpose of this Permanent Representatives’ working trip was to get acquainted with the leading Russian technologies. The foreign delegation included representatives of countries that actively develop peaceful nuclear technologies, and countries that show interest in developing their national programs of nuclear power industry.

Vladimir Voronkov, the Permanent Representative of Russia to the International Organizations in Vienna, “The most important question included into the visit’s agenda is a relation between nuclear power industry and ecology. The plant is situated in one of the cleanest places of the Leningrad Oblast and clearly demonstrates that nuclear power industry becomes green. At LNNP our guests have obtained complete answers to all questions related to safety, and now they understand that Russian nuclear power plants are probably the safest in the world.”

The program of the visit was very busy – the guests visited an operating power unit and a power unit under construction, as well as the facility on handling the spent nuclear fuel.

“Leningrad NPP was chosen to hold a working meeting for a reason”, the Plant Manager of LNPP Vladimir Pereguda noted. “It is here, at one site, we can demonstrate the experience of operation and modernization of operating power units, as well as innovative decisions applied during the construction of the VVER-1200 power unit of 3+ generation with improved technical and economical characteristics and tighter safety measures. The optimal configuration of our operating units’ safety systems – and especially the ones under construction – allows us to speak about the high level of their reliability and safety.”

After the technical tour the Ambassadors shared their impressions.

Paulina Maria Franceschi Navarro, the Ambassador of the Republic of Panama to the International Organizations in Vienna, “I would like to thank Rosatom for this visit and excellent experience that we have received during the tour to LNNP. We have seen how the nuclear power plant operates; we have learnt what investments are made in this field. On this basis I can say that the nuclear power plant shows a high level of safety, and this is very important. I would like to note another thing – the efforts on informing the population, community, concerned parties. I think this is very important that Rosatom has chosen such a strategy so that its activity would be understandable by local population, by all who lives near nuclear power plant.”

Hussam Al Husseini, the Ambassador of Jordan to the International Organizations in Vienna,“In every our trip we get an enormous impression from new technologies and developments that we are presented with. This time due to received information we have made sure both in nuclear power technology safety, and in safety of technologies offered by Rosatom. Having all the figures and facts about technical characteristics of nuclear power plants and their safety level, we can undertake informational work among our population and inform that involvement with this technology can be beneficial for environment.”

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
