Kursk NPP-2: since the beginning of the year more than 700 thousand cubic meters of soil have been excavated at the replacement plant construction site

Over 700 thousand cubic meters of soil from the total amount of 1200 thousand cubic meters, planned for 2017, have been excavated during the construction of power units No 1 and 2 of Kursk NPP-2 replacement plant in the first half of the year.

The work on the formation of sand and gravel bed for the foundations of the main power unit buildings is in progress. The builders plan to increase this figure from 2 to 4.5 thousand cubic meters per day.

This was reported on 12 July, 2017 at the regular meeting of the operational headquarters for the construction of the replacement plant.

The beginning of reinforcement of the reactor building foundation plate should become the key event of December, 2017. At present moment, the works on the construction site are underway; the installation of an automated steam block-modular boiler is in progress; preparatory commissioning of PS330/10 kV substation is underway; the assembly of a metal frame for a mechanical workshop with a forge has been completed; the assembly of a span structure of prefabricated reinforced concrete beams of the railway bridge through Seym is still going; and works on the preparation of the dewatering system for operation are carried out.

In June, the volume of capital investments assimilation amounted to 396 million rubles, including 269 million rubles for the construction and assembly works. In the third quarter of 2017 it is planned to assimilate 1 billion rubles for the construction and assembly works.

The participants separately discussed the measures on labor protection. In early July, the number of workers on the construction site was 600 people. Since the beginning of this year, no accidents and fires have been recorded. The assessment of the effectiveness of the safety management system (SMS) model regulations has been carried out. As additional measures for injury prevention at the construction site of Kursk NPP-2, it is planned to make unscheduled walkabouts. Since 3 July, a construction team of 22 students from the Obninsk Institute of Nuclear Energy NRNU MEPhI has been involved in the construction of the Kursk NPP-2 replacement units. They are sent to the three contractors to execute the safe operations.

* Kursk NPP-2 is a replacement plant for decommissioning power units of operating Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. The commissioning of the first two power units of the NPP-2 with a new type of VVER-TOI reactors is planned to be synchronized with the decommissioning of the operating plant power units No 1 and 2.

VVER-TOI (a standard optimized and informative power unit with VVER technology) meets modern Russian and international safety requirements, has a longer service life and a larger installed capacity than the operating plant reactors.

The Developer and the Construction Owner of the facility is Rosenergoatom Concern JSC. General Designer and General Contractor is ASE IC JSC.

At the moment, the Kursk NPP’s 1st, 2nd, and 4th power blocks operate at the capabilities set by the dispatch schedule.
The radiation background at the Kursk NPP and the area around it is within the normal power blocks’ operational limits and does not exceed the natural background.
