Leningrad NPP has shipped its first lot of isotope required for treatment of oncological diseases

For the first time Leningrad NPP has shipped to the customer – Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry – the lot of 6 containers with new iodine-131 for radiopharmaceuticals required for diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases. It is to be recalled that the agreement with the customer foresees weekly shipment of 4-6 container units with the content activity of 70-80 curie, that allows to execute 2-3 thousand procedures on diagnostics and treatment of oncological diseases every week. “The obtained isotope half-life is 8 hours, that is in 8 hours after the unloading from a reactor its activity will be two times lower. That is why the logistics of the shipment is thought out to the last detail, we can’t waste any minute”, the Head of the Radiotechnology Department of LNPP Yevgeniy Gorbunov explains. “We can’t allow any failure, because the stability of radiopharmaceuticals’ production depends on it.” LNPP’s RBMK reactors can reliably by turns irradiate materials without any stop and provide stable supply – a large reactor core allows to simultaneously irradiate a large number of container units. This allows low cost of the product. Leningrad NPP is specialized in irradiation of starting materials, it’s much more profitable as the technology is standardized and requires little personnel. Today there is a lack of facilities in the world that can irradiate targets and obtain isotopes. It is to be recalled that beside iodium-131 Leningrad NPP produces cobalt-60, iodium-125, molibden-99 and alloys silicon. The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
