Bilibino NPP: power unit No. 1 has been shut down for scheduled repair

On February 24, 2011 power unit No. 1 of Bilibino NPP was shut down for 50 days in order to carry out scheduled midlife repair.

During this period routine operations associated with repair of the NPP system equipment with partial refueling will be performed. Within the framework of Bilibino NPP lifetime extension it is planned to study the condition of metal structures (biological protection tank) of power unit No. 1 reactor installation using unique robotic systems. Carrying out these works will ensure the required safety level in the course of operation of power unit No. 1 during the additional period.

During the current month at the plant there have been no violations of limits and conditions of safe operation. At present Bilibino NPP operates power units Nos. 2,3 and 4 in the normal mode.

The radiation situation in the area of Bilibino NPP location and the 30-km control area corresponds to the normal operation mode and natural background values.

Bilibino NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located next to Bilibino city, in the Chukotka Autonomous District. Bilibino NPP operates four EGP-6 uranium-graphite pressurized tube reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 12MW (el.). The first power unit was commissioned in 1973, the second Р in 1974, the third Р in 1975, and the fourth one Р in 1976. The plant produces about 75% of energy generated in Chaun-Bilibino isolated electricity system (upon that the system takes about 40% of energy consumed in the Chukotka Autonomous District).

Detailed and timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is available in the site www.russianatom.ru.
