At the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 the generator assembly has started

In the turbine island of Novovoronezh NPP-2 power unit No 2 (power unit No 7 of Novovoronezh NPP) the specialists have proceeded to the assembly of the turbine generator TZV-1200. All components were supplied and placed at the site. A stator has already been put on its proper place, a rotor and an exciter have been delivered in the assembly area. Atomenergoproekt JSC is the General Designer, and ASE Group of companies, the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation, is the General Contractor.

According to the plan, the complete assembly of turbine generator will last 2 months. The equipment – as well as the equipment of the operating power unit No 1 of NVNPP-2 - was manufactured at Russian enterprise Siloviye mashiny PJSC. However, considering the experience gained at the starting stage of power unit No 1, as well as in the process of its operation, the manufacturer implemented a number of new engineering solutions.

Thus, supporting brackets of coil brace in the face part were significantly intensified; their number was increased from 14 to 19. The distance between brackets was reduced from a meter to a half a meter, and two culverts were replaced by one, more powerful, the fastening mechanism of output line was intensified.

As the Deputy Chief Engineer on Electric Machinery of Novovoronezh NPP Sergey Smirnov explained, as a result a new model with changed designed was obtained. “The construction passed not only the standard tests, but also additional ones, that are applicable only to the pilot models. For example, it passed the voltage proof test. The equipment held 49 kW (usually 36 kW). The break cap testing was carried out by both coils. All results of the testing were positive”, S. Smirnov noted.

The next key event of the construction site of NVNPP-2 power unit No 2 is the hot and cold trial of the power unit equipment. It is scheduled for this summer.

Innovative power units of 3+ generation have the improved technical and economic performance, that provides the complete safety during the operation. In their design the most advanced achievements and developments that meet all post-Fukushima requirements are used. The main feature of VVER-1200 project is the unique mix of active and passive safety systems that make the plant sustainable as much as possible to external and internal input. The special feature of the passive systems is their ability to perform in the situations with electric energy absence and without operator. In particular, a power unit with VVER-1200 reactor has a melt trap – a device serving to locate the melt of the nuclear reactor core, a system of passive heat removal through the steam generators (SPHR), designed to provide long-term diversion of heat from the reactor’s core to the atmosphere in the absence of any source of electric energy, etc.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

The power units Nos 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was stopped in 2016 for decommissioning activities. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is in the middle of construction and installation works; its commissioning is planned for 2018.
