Leningrad NPP: the last large stage of commissioning works before it startup has started at the power unit No 1 under construction

The construction of the power unit No 1 with VVER-1200 reactor at Leningrad NPP has entered its final stage. Recently at the construction site of the new power units specialists have proceeded to the power unit equipment hot trial – the last large commissioning stage before the startup.

During the hot trial they will check the design characteristics of the main equipment, technological systems, and their readiness for operation and loading of nuclear fuel. Thus, a successful implementation of hot trial stage in fact will mean the readiness of Leningrad NPP’s power unit No 1 for nuclear fuel loading.

At present time the power unit No 1 is under the large-scale commissioning. For 30 days specialists will carry out 78 hot water trials with different scenarios and prove working capacity of the main and auxiliary equipment and systems of the power unit No 1 reactor in design and operational modes.

During this time the specialists will carry out the complex of trials; in particular these will be the trial of the four reactor coolant pump sets with hot parameters, the main steampipes steam flushing, the complex trials of safety systems, the testing of the auxiliary power supply system, as well as the reactor control and safety system.

These procedures allow to confirm that startup of the new, most modern and most powerful power unit No 1 of Leningrad NPP will take place at the scheduled time, and its work will be reliable and safe during the entire operation period.

According to the Director General of Rosenergoatom Concern Andrey Petrov, Concern had managed to proceed to this important technological operation in the stated time due to a number of efficient management decisions. And confirming the power unit readiness to the start of hot trial stage, the Head of the Concern stressed that for 1.5 year of high quality work a large amount of construction, assembly and commissioning works had been done.

The important role of competent management approach of the project management working team, the atomic efforts of team of constructors, adjusters, fixers and all personnel of Leningrad NPP was also noted by the Plant Manager of Leningrad NPP Vladimir Pereguda. He said, “Certainly, this is an important event that pleases us, but it also requires even more concentration when power unit No 1 is at the final stage. Now we have to carry out another responsible task – transfer the constructed power unit No 1 to the condition when it can operate safely, reliably and effectively, and to do this we have to carry out the testing in a quality manner, in required volume, and within the established time limits.”

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
